To vaccinate or not to vaccinate? This very question has been igniting journalistic debates for a long time. Now that there is a pandemic, it is the number one topic. We know the position of both supporters and opponents of vaccination. What arguments are made on both sides? Here they are.

What exactly is a vaccine?

By this I mean a kind of preparation prepared in such a way as to imitate the normal infection of a given disease and induce immunity as if it were the consequence of a past disease caused by a bacterium or virus. The compositions of such preparations vary, but most often their main ingredient is one or more antigens extracted from live or dead microorganisms or their remains. Most live vaccines act faster, after just one dose. Vaccines produced from killed microorganisms should be repeated several times.

Why is a vaccine administered?

The main purpose of applying such a preparation is to induce immunological immunity. In the long run, it is about protecting the vaccinated person from the complications and consequences of the disease, which can not be predicted

What determines its effectiveness?

The effectiveness of a vaccine is influenced by at least several factors. In the first place it is the presence of the right antigens and auxiliary substances, which are also of great importance. The way in which the product is manufactured, stored and the vaccination schedule chosen for the particular situation are also important. The strength of the immune system of the vaccinated person and his age are also important

Controversy over vaccination

In recent years, there have been sizable groups of people who raise the lack of legitimacy of universal vaccinations in various ways. Some of these fall into the category of conspiracy theories and are difficult to argue with. Others point out that mandatory vaccination is not compatible with the human right to freedom. In addition, it is pointed out that:

  • vaccines can cause side effects in the form of inflammatory reactions, fever, rashes, enlarged lymph nodes,
  • vaccines are of no use without an immune response,
  • vaccination schedules are not tailored to individual needs, which is especially important for young children

The primary advantage of vaccination. What is it?

Listening to the arguments of opponents of vaccination, it can be deduced quite quickly that in practice few of their arguments make sense. Of course, vaccines can cause side effects, sometimes even serious ones, but these are extremely rare cases that represent more of a statistical possibility than a real threat. Keep in mind that the procedure for making a vaccine and bringing it to market is extremely long and only ends with marketing approval when the product has been meticulously tested. In short, we owe it to vaccines that we manage to avoid many diseases that are a real threat to the human population.

What other advantages do vaccines have?

Health protection against dangerous diseases for our body is only one of the advantages that vaccines give us. Let’s remember that right behind it goes a smaller amount of time spent on visits to doctors. The risk of complications is also lower. Thanks to vaccines, we protect ourselves and our loved ones from disease and possible infection. This is especially important for children and the elderly. Not without significance is also the fact that prevention is always cheaper than cure
