Diabetes is a civilization disease, which is spreading more and more every year. More and more people are forced to change and adjust their current lifestyle. One of the changes may concern physical activity – which, because of diabetes, should be properly planned. However, it is necessary for its treatment and prevention.

Diabetes and sport – why so important?

Physical activity is an extremely important part of our daily care for our health. Regular exercise helps us regulate blood glucose levels and maintain a healthy weight, which has a direct impact on reducing the risk of diabetes. If a patient has already been diagnosed with diabetes , sport will also help to reduce weight, which has a huge impact on the patient’s course of treatment. However, it should be remembered that physical activity should be properly planned with meals and taken into account in the dosage of drugs.

What kind of physical activity for diabetics?

Contrary to all beliefs, diabetes and sport can successfully go hand in hand. However, if you have been leading a sedentary lifestyle so far, a good start would be to introduce regular walking. For a person with diabetes, any kind of endurance exercise (aerobic) is suitable, such as

  • running,
  • swimming,
  • team ball games,
  • dancing,
  • pilates,
  • cycling,
  • fitness exercises.

Physical activity and diabetes – what to remember

Starting adventure with sport in diabetes of any type, you should remember about a few basic rules (about which you can read more at: szkoladiabetyka.pl/poradnik/)

First of all, before starting any activity, you should check the level of sugar in the blood. If the indicator is out of the norm, you should not undertake activity. It is important to avoid exercising on an empty stomach – the best choice would be to keep a 2-hour interval after eating a meal. Also, do not forget about adequate hydration during training to avoid the feeling of thirst.
